Why Huntr Uses Specific Templates

Some new users wonder why they can't upload their own resume template or why customization options work differently than expected. Here's what you need to know!

Huntr provides 7 professionally designed templates in a variety of colors and styles. Each template is ATS-friendly and carefully configured to make adding your resume content seamless, eliminating the need to worry about design or formatting adjustments.

Built to Create, Not Just Edit

Huntr's resume builder is designed to help you create a strong, optimized resume from the ground up, not simply edit an existing document. This approach allows our AI-powered suggestions and tailoring to work seamlessly with your content while ensuring every resume you create is optimized for both ATS systems and human readers.

You'll have the flexibility to quickly generate multiple tailored versions for different roles while maintaining consistency across all your resume versions. Rather than being constrained by the formatting choices of a previous resume, you're starting with a clean, professional foundation that's purpose-built for modern job applications.

ATS-Friendly by Design

Every Huntr template has been specifically designed with ATS compatibility and recruiter readability in mind. These templates use clean, simple structures that ATS software can easily parse, along with professional layouts that recruiters are familiar with. They feature proper heading hierarchy and spacing, plus standard fonts and formatting that won't cause parsing errors.

While custom templates might look visually impressive, they often use complex formatting, tables, columns, or graphics that confuse ATS systems. This means your resume might never reach a human reviewer, no matter how qualified you are for the role.

How Template Customization Works

What You Can Customize

You have significant control over your resume's appearance through the Layout & Style section of the resume editor. You can reorder sections (such as moving Experience before Education), adjust spacing and margins, change fonts and font sizes, modify colours on applicable templates, and toggle sections on or off.

Understanding Template Structure

Each template has a defined structure that maintains ATS compatibility. Templates with left-hand sidebars (like some two-column layouts) keep certain sections anchored in place, so personal info, skills, and other sidebar content stay in the left margin. Single-column templates offer more flexibility in section ordering.

This structure isn't a limitation but rather a feature that ensures your resume remains ATS-friendly no matter how you customize it. You can reorder sections within the template's framework using the Layout & Style controls.

Choosing the Right Template

Not sure which template to use? Here's a breakdown to help you decide.

You can preview each template and its available colours by clicking on the template previews and colour blocks in the Templates section of the resume editor.

Classic (Recommended for Most Users)

Classic is based on Harvard's widely-used template, which has been tested and proven effective across thousands of successful job applications. It features a clean, single-column layout that's easy to read and highly compatible with all ATS platforms. This template works well for most job seekers across all industries. When in doubt, start with Classic.

Hemlock & Bonsai

If you're looking for a minimal aesthetic, Hemlock and Bonsai are similar to Classic but with subtle design variations and colours that convey a more minimal, modern look while maintaining the same ATS-friendly single-column structure.

Aspen, Spruce & Maple

These templates are ideal if you prefer two-column layouts. They use a clean two-column structure with key information in a left sidebar and remain simple and ATS-friendly while offering a different visual organization. The templates also offer colour options to help your resume stand out and express your design preferences.

Cedar

Cedar is perfect for adding subtle personality while staying professional. This template combines simplicity and cleanliness with the option to use different font colours for section headers, allowing you to add a touch of personal style without compromising ATS compatibility.
